So what do the scientists make of all this astonishing evidence? Many
people who have a near-death experience accept what happened to them without
question as a profound spiritual phenomenon. Others are more curious: they
want to know if the experts can shed any real light on why the near-death
experience happens and what the near-death experience means.
Can the experts tell us what it means? The answer is essentially no.
There are lots of possible interpretations of sections of the near-death
experience. But so far, nobody has come up with an overall explanation
of what near-death experiences are and what near-death experiences mean
- apart from the obvious one that they are a foretaste of what
death will eventually be like for all of us. What follows are some of the
